Keep Up Momentum Around School Organization

Finding a system for organization and consistency is key. Here are some ways to stay organized and keep track of what’s happening at school:

A written agenda or planner page for each week of school.

  • Schoology and online assignment trackers are great, but these are not always kept up-to-date and can cause tension and arguments between teens and parents. Have your tween or teen keep a specific notebook or planner page with them to write down each classes assignments each day and keep track of upcoming projects, long-term assignments, and assessments.

Weekly backpack/folder clean-out parties.

  • Those papers start to stack up quickly! Have a system where your tween or teen spends time organizing papers and notes each week. Have a folder or spot at home where your teen can keep “retired homework/classwork” papers. These might come in handy for studying in the future, especially if your school has finals or cumulative assessments (but they need a place to live that isn’t the bottom of a backpack or locker, so give them a home!)

Designated homework time + space.

  • Having a designated check-in space and time each day or week is an important accountability tool for teens and tweens. If your teen is struggling to stay on top of school work, or struggles with procrastination/avoidance behaviors. Set aside an area in a common space (kitchen counter, table, shared desk space) where you and your teen can check-in and make a plan for staying on top of school work. Do they need help studying? Do they need some accountability check-ins throughout the week? Work together to find a system that works for your teen!
