Self-Care in the Summer
Follow a routine
While summer break allows for a break from the rigidity of school routines, it can be a bit overwhelming to have a full day with no structure. Keeping a basic routine like eating meals around the same time and going for a nightly walk after dinner can help your mental health and minimize anxiety about how to spend your days.
Spend time outside
It’s time to take advantage of the sunshine as the weather in Seattle warms up! Exposure to sunlight increases our bodies’ vitamin D production, which plays an important part in mood regulation. Doing some physical exercise in the sunshine will also release endorphins and improve both physical and mental health!
Practice sleep hygiene
It can be tempting to stay up all night with the freedom of sleeping in the next day, but poor sleep hygiene can negatively impact your quality and quantity of sleep. Balancing the freedom of sleeping in with keeping a consistent schedule and getting daylight hours will optimize your sleep and leave you energized and ready to enjoy your summer break. Find what patterns work best for you and give you the rest you need to take advantage of your summer.
Get involved in your community
It can be easy to isolate yourself without the day-to-day socialization that school offers. Try out some of the fun events and activities that Seattle offers in the summertime, like one of the many festivals being held around the city or a trip to MoPop.
